Depending on the time of year you visit, there are also popular Christmas markets known as Christkindlmarkt, where you can buy traditional handmade crafts while enjoying a steaming cup of local mulled wine.

Salzburg’s Old Town has charming squares with more than 400 shops and boutiques, and the Getreidegasse is the most famous shopping street in the city. The city’s coffee houses are also full of great gifts to take home, including Swiss chocolates.

Austria hosts a wide variety of great-tasting food. From mile-long markets with sausage stands to lively cafes, rooftop restaurants and coffee houses, the choices are as tempting as the servings. With typical Austrian dishes, such as wiener schnitzel (boneless fried veal), kasespatzle (Austrian-style macaroni and cheese), tafelspitz (boiled beef, vegetables and roasted potatoes) and tasty apple strudel, you’ll find mouthwatering delights everywhere you turn.

From coffee houses and beer gardens to gourmet restaurants and pastry shops, your taste buds will have a real treat in Salzburg. Pretzel stands are everywhere and Austrians love them in all kinds of shapes and flavors, including stuffed with cheesy sausage. Known as the beer capital of Austria, the amber nectar has been brewed in Salburg for more than 600 years. For nightlife, the city has three distinct social districts — Rudolfskai, Anton-Neumayer-Platz and Steingasse. And, for a romantic dinner, visit the remarkable Salzburg Fortress.
