Explore San Francisco
The city on the bay is full of iconic attractions, like the scenic waterfront district and Alcatraz, the former maximum-security prison. With the past influence of hippies in Haight-Ashbury, and Silicon Valley's techie revolution, the city remains as diverse as its character.
Hills define San Francisco’s topography, and chic neighborhoods tucked in the landscape are where the city’s pulse and charm live. The Mission District is the city’s oldest neighborhood, and home to the largest concentration of murals. Union Square is the center of San Francisco’s shopping scene, and Nob Hill is its signature neighborhood, renowned for its landmarks and famous hotels.
- The streets of San Francisco Slide 1 of 3: Once upon a time, cable cars serviced the entire city. Today, only three lines remain, but they can take you to some of San Francisco's most popular neighborhoods.
- Wine Country Slide 2 of 3: Situated north of San Francisco are two of the premier wine growing areas in the United States and the world — the Napa and Sonoma Valleys.
- Chinatown Slide 3 of 3: The oldest in North America, and one of the largest outside Asia, Chinatown has many wonders to explore, from dim sum eateries to karaoke bars.
Take a charming cable car to Fisherman’s Wharf to watch sea lions, and shop in the waterfront markets. Here, you can also visit Ghirardelli Square for mouth-watering chocolates. Head over to the Sunset/Golden Gate Park neighborhood to marvel at the majestic Golden Gate Bridge and the gardens and golf courses that surround it. Take a selfie in front of Chinatown’s pagoda roofs and dragon lampposts. And, a must-see is Haight-Ashbury’s flamboyant clothing shops, vibrant Victorian houses and hip restaurants.
A West Coast getaway wouldn’t be complete without activities, such as surfing, golfing, sport fishing and market browsing. Take a day trip across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito, a quaint community of artists, fine restaurants and waterfront shops. Or travel to Muir Woods National Monument to traverse forests of towering redwoods. Also nearby, you’ll find the wine producing valleys of Napa and Sonoma. There’s so much to do, and so many reasons to return to San Francisco again and again.
